Established on February 11, 2005, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, the Melvin J. and Alice Gayle Reeder Scholarship was created by the Reeder children in memory of their parents to assist graduates of Northern York County Senior High School in Dillsburg, Pa..  The scholarship honors Melvin and Gayle Reeder, whose eight children all graduated from Northern and who, from 1967 to 1988, had at least one child attending the school for 21 consecutive years.

Award Amount and Criteria
The scholarship is currently valued at $1,000 and is awarded annually to one graduating senior for the first year of college.  Recipients who choose to attend a Pennsylvania college/university may be eligible for an additional $1,000 matching grant through AES/PHEAA’s “Partnership for Access To Higher Education” or PATH Program.  For additional information on this program, click here.

Primary consideration for awarding the scholarship is financial need though recipients must also demonstrate good citizenship and a strong work ethic.  If two or more students are deemed to have similar need, citizenship and worth ethic, preference may be given to the student who comes from a larger family.

Application/Selection Process
Students wishing to be considered for the scholarship must complete the Scholarship Application and submit it along with a copy of their FAFSA's Student Aid Report and a biography that lists the student's activities, accomplishments, community service and/or part-time jobs that demonstrate individual character and work ethic. The deadline for the application and accompanying materials is May 1st.

The recipient will be selected by a scholarship committee comprised of three teachers and/or administrators at the high school.

Application
The Scholarship Application is available for download in both .pdf and Microsoft Word formats, or it may be obtained in the high school guidance office.  Questions may be emailed to reederscholarship@comcast.net  or you may contact the guidance office at 432-8691.

Additional Information
The scholarship fund is an endowment administered by the Dillsburg Area Foundation, a regional component of the Foundation for Enhancing Communities.  At the time when the fund can sustain an additional award, a scholarship will be given to one male and one female senior for their first years of college.   Eventually, the family's goal is to make the scholarship a four-year renewable award.  Those wishing to make a contribution to the fund may do so through the Dillsburg Area Foundation to receive maximum tax benefits.  Checks should be made payable to The Reeder Scholarship Fund, c/o Dillsburg Area Foundation, 200 North Third Street, PO Box 678, Harrisburg, PA  17108-0678, or donors can click here to make an on-line payment through the Foundation's secure web-site.  All contributions are acknowledged with a letter that can be used for tax deduction purposes.
